Howdy y'all, I first thought this was a redtail hawk but upon further investigation I determined this is a species known as the broadwing hawk. It is about the same size as a redtail but has a much broader wing and the heavily mottled chest feathers. They say these birds can see mice on the ground from almost 500 feet in the air. The broader wings make them highly capable of riding the thermals to very high altitudes. They sometimes migrate as much as 4,300 miles in the season changes...kewl beans!!
