    Apollo 8 was the first manned voyage to escape Earth's gravitational field and travel to another celestial body, the Moon. The crew consisted of Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and William Anders. On Christmas Eve, 1968, during their ninth orbit of the Moon the crew made a television broadcast during which they read from the Book of Genesis. Following their reading Borman closed the broadcast with "And from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, and a Merry Christmas to all of you, all of you on the good Earth" Millions of people around the world watched that broadcast, making it the most watched TV program in the history of television up to that time. The TV image was fuzzy and it didn't give a very good view of the Moon but it was still very exciting to watch a signal coming from such a great distance. Even though forty years have passed, I still remember watching that broadcast as if it were yesterday. This video clip is from that broadcast.
