The very strong solar storm continues. People in the British Isles, Denmark, and Scandinavia have a good chance of seeing aurora. Perhaps even northern France, Germany , Poland, etc.

INCOMING CME: As Earth's magnetic field reverberates from the impact of one CME on March 8th, a second CME is on the way. Big sunspot AR1429 unleashed an M6-class solar flare today, and the eruption hurled a cloud of plasma almost directly toward Earth. Forecasters say the CME could reach our planet during the late hours of March 10th or early hours of March 11th. Strong geomagnetic storms are possible when the cloud arrives.

Sun, I walked to the road (due South) to pick up my mail. Blue sky, beautiful day.
Walking back to my house (due North) less than 1/4 mile from Lake Ontario, a solid wall of thick dark clouds heading towards me. Within 10 minutes it was snowing like hell. A half hour later blue sky and the snow was melting. That happen 3 times over the past 3 hours.
An interesting observation as to how the Great Lakes effect weather around here. However, the chances of the weather cooperating to view the Northern Lights are not good.
We have two month of Summer when the weather is stable (July & August), because the Lake temperature is somewhere around 70 degrees.
I'm hoping for strong geomagnetic storms this summer, I might not be alive in 11 years for the next cycle.

You might get lucky and have a partially cloudy sky. With the moon so damn bright, could help if the cover the moon but still give you some places to see the sky to the north.
It was clear all day today, but now that the sun will be down in about an hour I have total overcast.

Sun, not a chance, and I don't need to look outside.
The wind is roaring, the house and things outside shake and rattle. It's a sound and feeling you get use to around here.
When we first move out here and it happened and/ or we had 5 foot snow drifts in the driveway, it was WTF...not anymore.
I so want to live in the desert mountains of the South West.

I'm thinking of relocating to the SW too. Property is dirt cheap in Phoenix and even cheaper in Vegas and Reno. There is no way in hell I would ever live in a city but I could sell this place and buy a few homes for rentals and buy some land out in the desert and move a house on to it.
I love camping in the desert, great dark sky.
BTW, some of the aurora watchers in northwestern NY are getting optimistic for the weekend.

Sun, last night: clear sky, full moon, but I didn't see anything. I don't think it was the moon light.
The desert, I had many business trips to the Southwest . Always, took a couple of days of vacation and drove into the desert, taking side roads they seem to go to nowhere. Like being on another planet.
I love the peace and quite, there is never peace and quite in the Northeast.
The silence in the desert is a sound you don't hear around here. It's quite, but you know it's alive. The sound of the wind, you might hear a bird, those silly looking Road Runner birds running around, you can hear yourself breathing, and walking in the dirt. The air smells different. You know and feel you are really alone, which never happens in the Northeast.
In someways like Scuba Diving, you're floating in a different world, the fish find you curious, and all you hear is your breathing and bubbles from your regulator.

It's very quiet where I live, other than the frequent howling of the wind (35 knots as I write this). On a still night the only sounds one hears are the coyotes and Horned Owls. When I visit people who live in town I can never sleep, the traffic noise always keep me awake and I can never manage sleep in a motel. I notice ever footstep in the hallways.
When I used to dive I always found it interesting that sound travels so far. You can hear a boat prop miles away. And when under the ice it can get a bit weird with the bombing and grinding sounds as the ice shifts.
Last night there was just a very minor diffuse green glow for about an hour. I have a very dark sky and I could barely see it. However the Earth is getting hit again and things are looking good for tonight.

BTW, on very rare occasions it is possible to hear the northern lights. It's a crackling and humming sound. Magical!

Clouds last night and rain. Suppose to clear tonight. Chances of seeing are good, today and tomorrow.

Before the first one exploded, I would have jumped on board, but not after that.
I'm surprised the programed lasted as long as it did. There was a good chance of getting killed on all of the missions.

The stuff was designed back during the Nixon Administration, and since then nothing new has made it past the drawing boards. A reusable spacecraft seemed like a good idea, but by the time they realized it was not terribly practical so much money had been sunk into the program that no one wanted to back out and no serious effort was made to come up with an alternative.
The Russians have tossing their Soyuz into the sky since 1966. They build the damn things on an assembly line. They are ugly, crude, and uncomfortable; but the safest and most cost effective spacecraft ever flown. In the mean time, we've got nothing.
